About

Hi, I'm Alessio.

I'm a data engineer based in Belgium. I build data platforms and teach the fundamentals behind them.

What I do

I design and build the systems that move, model and protect data: ETL and ELT pipelines, data models, data warehouses and lakehouses, and the APIs that give secure access to them.

Most of my work runs on SQL Server and Splunk, Azure Data Factory and Synapse, Databricks and Spark, and Microsoft Fabric. I use Python and PowerShell for the glue, Docker to package and run what I build, REST APIs to serve data to other applications, and Power BI at the end of the chain.

Over the last years my focus has moved toward reliable and secure data platforms: data quality checks that catch problems before users do, secure access to data through APIs, and observability. The point where data engineering meets cybersecurity is what interests me most right now.

Teaching

Before I worked full-time on data platforms, I was a trainer: I've delivered more than 400 hours of training on data engineering, cloud and analytics, to postgraduate students and to professionals. Today I also lead a Data & AI practice, helping colleagues grow their skills.

I didn't start in tech. I studied economics at the University of Bologna, and I became a data engineer through an intensive course, learning the fundamentals the hard way. That's why I believe in them.
